BioHio Research Park

Regions across the nation are facing a dramatic transformation as the United States moves to an economy driven by technology. The Ohio State University and the communities of Wooster/Wayne County, Ohio have long recognized this transformation in the economy and since 1999 have collaborated on the establishment of the BioHio Research Park to be located on the campus of the Ohio Agricultural and Research Development Center (OARDC).

The BioHio Research Park complements and capitalizes on the significant research capabilities and experience of the OARCDC. Its potential economic benefit to be enterprises and the surrounding communities are widely recognized throughout Wayne County, Northeast Ohio and the State of Ohio. Its components include:

Innovation Village - A collaborative environment offering individual offices, labs and other working areas along with common areas and meeting rooms

Research Park - More than 80 acres of land is available for the development of facilities to house growing and established companies that can capitalize from the research capabilities of the OARDC and BioHio components.

Plant & Animal Agrosecurity Research (PAAR) - An advanced and secure research facility for organisms that cause disease in animals or plants. This BL3 facility will enable scientists to undertake critically important research in new and emerging areas in the study of infectious diseases of animals and plants. Very few facilities exist of this type and scale and demand for their use is increasing because of new government policies.

BioMass to Energy Center- Accelerated research into the development of cellulosic ethanol and other biofuels that seek to make biofuels a truly viable and cost-effective alternative to fossil fuels.  The Center has already proven effective in its research into bio-based products and biofuels utilizing renewable feed stocks and waste by-products, including anaerobic fermentation.

The Molecular and Cellular Imaging Center- Facilities include advanced capabilities to perform DNA sequencing, genomics and bioinformatics.

Arden Shisler Center for Education & Economic Development - A modern conference and distance-learning center that includes a 1,000-seat auditorium.

BioHio offers several potential economic benefits. Among those are:

·    Stimulating economic development in the region and beyond from both entrepreneurial pursuits and the attraction of established companies to the region.

·    Attracting and retaining the world class talent needed to both sustain a knowledge based economy and maintain the OARDC’s reputation and capabilities as a cutting-edge research institution.

·    Developing space, facilities, services, and programs that support agbiosciences research and innovation and the commercialization of discoveries.

·    Accelerating the flow of technology from the lab to the marketplace and linking the expertise and resources of Ohio State to the needs of the private sector.

·    Providing the world with an increased standard of living through advances in animal health and disease prevention; conversion of biomass into clean energy; bio-based chemicals, polymers, and materials; food production and the security of our food supply; sustainability, bioremediation, and environmental protection.

·    Allowing the intellectual and physical assets of the OARDC to provide new sources of needed revenue.
